FBA Conducts Tennessee Diversified Oilseed Feedstock Development Program

The Tennessee Oilseed Feedstock Development program is a project designed to develop improved oilseed crops, expand infrastructure, develop winter/summer rotations and otherwise expand the production of agricultural-based oils for industrial use. The Oilseed Diversification Program will provide opportunities for increased income among West Tennessee Farmers by identifying varieties that with higher value that can be produced and processed in West Tennessee. Through the Memphis Bioworks Foundation, Frazier, Barnes & Associates is tackling this monumental effort for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture.
The Tennessee Oilseed Feedstock Development program will allow West Tennessee to choose higher value oilseed crops that have been prescreened and tested for their agronomic capabilities. Each oilseed that makes the list of “recommended” oilseeds will have the characteristics desired by growers, processors and the end-users! Once completed, the Oilseed Feedstock Development program will become a template for other crops.
The Tennessee Oilseed Feedstock Development program will benefit West Tennessee Farmers by:
- Decreasing the transportation cost necessary to have the oilseed crops processed in other states or countries
- Opening the opportunity for ownership in integrated value-added processing and the production of sustainable biofuels and biobased products
- Allow growers to capture value from both higher oil content and more desirable oil characteristics
The Tennessee Oilseed Feedstock Development program will be a strategic blueprint in the move toward biobased products and biofuels. A series of meetings will be held for stakeholders, including the New Crops Field Tour on August 6, 2008 at the Agricenter in Memphis, Tennessee.
